The list of "Hispanic-Serving Institutions" (HSIs) that appears in this Web site is not, in any way, an "official" list of such institutions. The definition of an HSI given below may not be the same as the U.S. Department of Education's definition of institutions eligible for the Title V program, which can be found at http://www.ed.gov/programs/idueshsi/definition.html.

The definition of an HSI used by this Web site to produce its list of Hispanic-Serving Institutions is the following:

Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are public and private nonprofit, regionally accredited colleges and universities in the United States (including Puerto Rico) at which the Hispanic undergraduate student enrollment constitutes a minimum of 25% of the total enrollment. The Hispanic enrollment percentages at the institutions listed in the current HSI tables are drawn from data in the U.S. Department of Education’s Fall 2007 Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).  Regional accreditation status is also derived from the IPEDS database or from the Web sites of the “Regional Accrediting Organizations” recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation  For institutions that do not enroll undergraduate students, the minimum 25% Hispanic student criterion is applied to the levels of students that the institutions enroll.  Colleges and universities that otherwise meet the listing criteria (control, Hispanic enrollment and accreditation) but do not appear as individual institutions in IPEDS are eligible to be listed if they can provide documentation of designation as an HSI from an agency of the federal government.
